Handling Multiple Clients in Java Game Development

When creating a multiplayer game, one of the biggest challenges is handling multiple clients connecting to the server simultaneously. In this article, we will explore how to achieve this using Java.

To start with, it's essential to ensure that your program doesn't become unresponsive when handling an infinite number of new clients trying to connect. A waiting screen can be a good solution in situations where waiting is needed, as it doesn't cancel rendering events or input events. However, you should make sure the main thread is never 'waiting' on the server thread.

To avoid delays in gameplay, it's crucial to pass messages sent or received asynchronously to the main thread. If you want to minimize delays, this shouldn't be your main thread but rather an additional one. When a socket is able to open and connect, dedicate a separate thread for chatting with the server. If multiple threads are required, players can input their messages on each of them.

On the client side, things become even simpler. When someone finally connects, create a new dedicated thread with a socket connecting to that client. This thread should always be open and listening for anyone trying to connect. This task should be handled by a dedicated thread that handles ONLY this task.

To implement this in Java, you can start by opening a socket on the server side and choosing a port. You can then create multiple threads, each handling a single connection with the client. When a client loses connection (logs off or force quits), kill the corresponding thread.
